Get The Right Litter and Box

Just like people, each cat has its own, unique preferences. That’s why your kitten probably likes one type of box or litter better than another.  It’s up to you to find out what your kitten likes best.

When choosing a litterbox, keep the following in mind:

  • Purchase a small litterbox while your kitten is still little.
  • Buy a larger box when your kitten grows bigger.
  • When choosing between a covered and uncovered litterbox, keep in mind that some cats feel trapped inside a covered box.

You must also determine which type of litter to use. You might think this is a simple decision, but the wide range of options makes it a bit more complicated than expected.

Here are some of those options:

  • Clay-based litters
  • Silica gel crystal litters
  • Wood
  • Pine
  • Corn
  • Grass
  • Wheat
  • Bamboo
  • And more!

Some litters clump, others are good for odor control, and some are better for the environment. You must do your research to find a litter you feel good about using.

And remember, your kitten has to like it too. You may have to test different options until you find the one your kitten will actually use.

How to Litter Train Kittens

When you have the right box and litter, getting your kitten to use the litterbox shouldn’t be a problem.

But if you really want to make sure your kitty understands what the litterbox is for, follow these steps:

  • When you bring your new fur baby home, immediately take your kitten to the litterbox.
  • Put your kitty inside the box so that your kitten can inspect it.
  • While your kitten is still adjusting to living with you, place your kitty in the litterbox after every meal. This will encourage your kitten to use it.
  • Don’t forget to reward your kitten each time the box is used.
  • If accidents occur, don’t punish your kitten.  Just quietly clean up the mess.
  • Use an enzymatic cleaner to eradicate any lingering scents from the accident. This will prevent your kitty from using that spot again.

Resolve Issues

While most kittens will use the litterbox without a fuss, trouble can arise from time to time. If your kitten isn’t consistently using the litterbox, try these tips:

  • Use a different box or type of litter. As already mentioned, each kitten has its own, unique preferences.
  • Try placing the litterbox in a different spot. Perhaps your kitty doesn’t like its current location.
  • If you must move the litterbox, consider setting up a cat zone.  This special place for your kitten can include toys, a cat scratcher, a cat tree, and a litterbox.
  • Clean the litterbox frequently. Cats hate using a dirty box!
  • If none of the above works, it might be time to get your cat checked out.  In some cases, litterbox problems are caused by underlying health issues.

Getting your kitten to use the litterbox is an important job. Fortunately, this task isn’t hard, especially when you follow this article’s guidance on how to litter train kittens.
